Study in Romania

Overview

The Romanian student visa is a Long-Stay Visa (Type D/SD). It is managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) and requires a Letter of Acceptance issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education before you can even begin the visa application.

1. Eligibility Criteria

Academic: A Letter of Acceptance from the Romanian Ministry of Education (obtained via your chosen university).

Tuition: You must pay the tuition fee for the first academic year in full before applying for the visa.

Language Proficiency: Proof of English (IELTS 5.5+) or French proficiency for those programs. If studying in Romanian, you must complete a mandatory Preparatory Year unless you pass a proficiency test.

2. Romania Student Visa Document Checklist

• Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond the visa's expiry; must have at least 2 blank pages.

• Passport Photos: Two recent color photos (3cm x 4cm) on a white background.

• Letter of Acceptance: The original document issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education.

• Proof of Tuition Payment: Receipt or bank transfer confirmation for the first year’s fees.

• Financial Proof: Evidence of means of support, typically €500–€700 per month for the duration of the visa (approx. €6,000+ in a bank statement).

• Police Clearance Certificate: A "Criminal Record" from your home country, apostilled or legalized.

• Medical Insurance: Coverage of at least €30,000, valid for the entire stay in Romania/Schengen.

• Health Certificate: Attesting that you do not suffer from contagious diseases.

• Accommodation Proof: Dormitory confirmation from the university or a notarized rent contract.

• Flight Booking: A round-trip flight reservation or itinerary.

• Visa Fee: Approximately €120 (non-refundable).

3. The Application Workflow

University Admission: Apply to a Romanian university; they forward your file to the Ministry for the Acceptance Letter.

Ministry Approval: Wait 30–60 days for the official Letter of Acceptance.

Visa Application: Submit your documents via the e-visa.mae.ro portal and book an interview at the Embassy.

Post-Arrival (Permit): Within 30 days of arrival, you must apply for a Residence Permit at the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI).
