Study in Malta

Overview

Students from non-EU/EEA countries planning to study in Malta for more than 90 days must apply for a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D). Once in Malta, you will also need to apply for an e-Residence Permit within your first 90 days.

Below is the comprehensive checklist of required documentation.

1. Primary Identity & Application Documents

  • Visa Application Form: Duly filled and signed.

  • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay (though 6–8 months is recommended) and have at least two blank pages.

  • Passport-Sized Photos: Usually two recent color photos (3.5cm x 4.5cm) against a white background, following ICAO standards.

  • Confirmed Travel Itinerary: A flight reservation or "dummy ticket" showing your intended entry into Malta.

2. Academic Documentation

  • Official Letter of Acceptance: An unconditional offer from a licensed Maltese educational institution (registered with MFHEA). It must state the course title, MQF level, duration, and ECTS credits.

  • Proof of Payment: A receipt showing you have paid at least 50% of your tuition fees (some embassies require 100% for the first year).

  • Original Educational Certificates: Your previous diplomas or transcripts, often required to be apostilled or legalized by your Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

3. Financial Proof (Crucial)

You must prove you can support yourself without working. The standard requirement is approximately €18 to €26 per day, totaling roughly €9,000–€11,000 for the first year.

  • Personal Bank Statements: Original statements from the last 3 to 6 months.

  • Sponsorship: If a parent is funding you, you need a notarized Affidavit of Sponsorship, the sponsor’s bank statements, and often their tax returns (ITR).

  • International Debit/Credit Card: A copy of a card that can be used in Malta is frequently requested.

4. Accommodation & Health

  • Proof of Accommodation: A lease agreement (registered with the Housing Authority), a letter from your school confirming campus housing, or a "Declaration of Proof" from a Maltese host.

  • Health Insurance: * Minimum Coverage: €30,000 for the visa application.

  • Medical Certificate: A fitness certificate from a recognized doctor may be required depending on your country of origin.

5. Other Requirements

  • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC): An original criminal record check from your home country, issued within the last 6 months and apostilled.

  • English Proficiency: Proof of language skills (IELTS, TOEFL, or a Medium of Instruction letter from your previous school) if your course is in English.

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): A letter explaining why you chose Malta and your specific course.
